Saint John's first cruise ship passengers of the year experience Saint John with DayTripping NB

Passengers from the Carnival Glory arrived to Saint John today, and despite the overcast and slightly rainy weather, we managed to give them an experience to remember here at DayTripping NB. Hailing from states as close as North Carolina and as far as California, passengers partook in our "Hike, Bike, and Paddle' excursion, in which we took them hiking and biking around Rockwood Park, finishing off with a kayaking and canoe trip on the picturesque Lily Lake. As we bid the passengers farewell, we couldn't help but think that this was going to be the start of a very fun and exciting summer. Check out some photos from the day!

My Favourite Place - Minister's Island

My Favourite Places

Hi, Rob here (Daytripping Owner). I am back. As I mentioned last week I thought I would take a few minutes every week to share with you a special place I have found in my many years of outdoor adventure training. Most locations will be in New Brunswick, but I may dabble into Maine or our neighbouring provinces. Hopefully after reading you will be inspired to go and enjoy this spot.

Quick legal blurb – I, and Maritime DayTripping Inc., cannot be responsible if you venture out there and hurt yourself, get lost trying to locate ‘My Favourite Places’, or something worse. We should all be responsible for our own actions. I am just letting you know of a cool spot I have been to. Okay?

Minister’s Island
A week ago I had the pleasure of returning to Minister’s Island, near St. Andrews. It was a beautiful day for a visit. I had not been here for several years, since my family lived in St. Andrews. On this particular day I was working but had some time to stop into some of the buildings of the Van Horne Estate.
Minister’s Island is a 500 acre ‘part-time’ island, as at low tide you can visit by driving on the ocean floor, high tide you must boat to the island. To get to the island you must drive to St. Andrews NB via route 127 (off Route 1). Before arriving in town follow signs for the Bar Road.

The Island has fantastic hiking/mountain biking trails where you are sure to see whitetail deer that live on the Island. The Island offers incredible easy access ocean paddling, in a fairly safe area, which can be rare for the Fundy Coast due to currents caused by the tides. Some caution is needed for a few locations, and there is some exposure paddling on the back (southern side) of the island. If you kayak around the island, be sure to look for the interesting geological changes as you transition from the Perry Formation sedimentary rocks (Sandstone and Conglomerate), see evidence of a massive geological dyke, and evidence of basalt (lava!!) that was laid by a giant ancient volcano (nearby Chamcook/Greenlaw Mountains form the cone of this volcano).

Visiting the island during the summer months may come at a small cost. See http://www.ministersisland.net/ for info. Keep an eye on your watch if you drove over, as your road may disappear for a few hours leaving you stranded on the island – Keep Exploring if this is the case.

My Favourite Places - Lepreau Falls

My Favourite Places

Hi, Rob here (Daytripping Owner). I thought I would take a few minutes every week to share with you a special place I have found in my many years of outdoor adventure training.

Okay?

Lepreau Falls
One of the easiest ‘drive-by’ waterfalls in New Brunswick. Head west of Saint John, and take the exit off Route 1 onto Route 790. From 790, you will want to take route 795 west almost immediately. Just past the Petro Canada gas station is the Lepreau Falls Road. The falls are a couple of hundred meters down this road. Enjoy!!

The falls are part of our UNESCO Stonehammer Geopark, much like the Daytripping Climbing Cliff in Rockwood Park. The Falls show rocks that “belong to the Mabou Group (CMA) and are likely Early Carboniferous age, about 325 to 315 million years old.” Rumour is there are fossil tracks to be found. The falls are a great example of erosion, as we can see evidence of the Lepreau River eroding the rock, as well as our powerful Bay of Fundy tides eroding the bottom of the falls.
If you are lucky and the tide is high and river levels are just right, you may see a kayaker or two running the falls and into the Bay, I won’t mention any names ;)

Message From The New Owner of DayTripping

Hello Newsletter Subscribers,

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Rob Lemmon and I am the proud new owner of Maritime Daytripping Inc. I have taken over the operations from Yennah Hurley in Rockwood Park.

I am a Saint John native having been born here when my parents lived in Renforth. I have spent my entire life enjoying the outdoors, and my entire professional career teaching people how to enjoy safe outdoor adventure activities. After over a dozen years teaching at the college/university level, I am now taking a crack at being an entrepreneur.

My desire is to share my love of the outdoors to the people of New Brunswick so they also can have safe and enjoyable outdoor adventure experiences. I hope to see you all come out and enjoy all that we have to offer at DayTripping.
