Walking Proud Nordic Walking Club

DayTripping @ Rockwood Park has grown into a diverse outdoor adventure recreation company, but it didn't always include pedal boats and kayaks, snowshoes and skis, mountain bikes and roller blades. DayTripping actually started out as a Nordic Walking club called Walking Proud. Yennah Hurley lead groups of Nordic Walkers on regular morning and evening walks at locations throughout the Greater Saint John Area. She sold poles out of the back of her van from an inventory in her basement and charged a monthly membership fee to participants.

The company has grown and morphed into something much more. Shortly after opening a retail location for her Nordic Walking group at the Lily Lake Pavilion in Rockwood Park, Yennah began expanding her service offerings. DayTripping now offers a variety of outdoor adventure recreation equipment rentals and provides guides and instructors for individuals and groups for activities like rock climbing, geocaching and interpretive nature hikes. The staff of DayTripping is also gearing up for it's second summer day camp program.

Despite all of the changes at DayTripping, Yennah is still walking proudly with her Nordic Walking poles. Yennah is a certified National Coach and Master Trainer with the International Nordic Walking Association in Finland and Nordic Walk North America in California. She regularly provides Nordic Walking workshops in communities across New Brunswick. DayTripping has Nordic Walking poles available for sale, and the Walking Proud club is still alive and well, *and now free*, providing Nordic Walkers with a fun, social environment to get out and enjoy their poles.

It's free to join in on a walk.

If you are looking for a fun and an enthusiastic walking group, let Yennah and her trained Nordic Walking Instructors take you on a great walk. They meet all over the city five days a week, mornings and evenings. All you have to do is show up at any of the following locations.

Morning Nordic Walking Groups:
  • Monday - Wednesday - Friday: Commex Bus Stop parking lot (behind the bowling alley on the old Hampton Road in Quispamsis), 9:30 am.
  • Tuesday and Thursday - DayTripping @ Rockwood Park, 9:30 am.
Evening Nordic Walking Groups:
  • Monday – Red Whale Parking Lot, Quispamsis, 6:30 pm.
  • Tuesday – Alex Coffin's Fitness Shop, Harbour Passage, Market Square, 6:30 pm.
  • Thursday – DayTripping @ Rockwood Park, 6:30 pm.
If you would like to book a Nordic Walking workshop for your workplace, organization or community, contact Yennah Hurley. Call 657-8747 or e-mail yennah@daytrippingnb.com.

NB Dominates the Selection: 15 Entrepreneurs Selected to Participate in ELP3

Fredericton, NB – Fifteen of the region’s most successful entrepreneurs were selected to participate in the Wallace McCain Institute’s prestigious Entrepreneurial Leaders Program (ELP).  The announcement was made today at the Crowne Plaza in Fredericton after an intense two day process of interviews and interaction.

“The finalists emerged from 228 nominations that were received over the last 4 months,” said Nancy Mathis, Executive Director of the Wallace McCain Institute for Business Leadership at the University of New Brunswick.  “While the competition was fierce, we are confident that the selected entrepreneurs will each bring a unique perspective to the program.”

The 15 winners were chosen from a group of twenty-four finalists from across the Maritimes, but the final 15 were all from New Brunswick.  This is the third year of the program, and the past two years of participants were on site after the announcement to welcome the new group (below) to the growing circle of highly connected entrepreneurs.

“When we started this program 3 years ago, we wondered if we would exhaust the supply of high growth potential entrepreneurs after 5 years,” said Derek Oland, chairman of the institute’s Management Committee, during the banquet following the full day of face-to-face interviews with the finalist. “After today, I don’t have that worry any longer.  The quality and quantity surpassed my wildest hopes.”

Participants in ELP3 are entrepreneurs who have been running their own business for several years, and are ready to “bust out” and take their business to the next stage. ELP is a year-long program that brings these 15 entrepreneurs together for 2 days per month to benefit from guest speakers, tailored workshops and the opportunity to share their experiences and insights.
