Spring Kayaking

SPRING KAYAKING - LEARN A NEW SKILL AND HAVE FUN DOING IT. 

Intro Kayaking
Introduction to Kayaking introduces the novice to paddling a kayak in calm sheltered water. Rescue techniques at this level incorporate the use of a paddling partner.

Location: This is a sheltered waters course such as a Lake

Duration: 1 day
Dates:  
Prerequisites: none, except a desire for fun and no issue getting wet!!
Cost: $85/person not including equipment/$95 with Kayak/Skirt/Paddle + HST

Beginner Recreational River Kayak (Long Boats & Open Cockpit)

The Beginner River Kayaking skill level is designed to introduce the novice or relatively inexperienced kayaker to paddling moving water with perhaps some Class I. The emphasis is on learning and practicing the fundamentals of kayaking, along with a strong grounding in water safety and safe kayaking practices. Our goal is that you will be able to safely paddle your open cockpit kayak (no spray skirt) down rivers such as the Hammond/Nerepis/ Nashwaak/Pollet/upper St. We will use a 'Comfort-to-Control' technique to get you over your fears and reservations and into enjoyment of the sport of kayaking.

Location: Day 1 on the Lake, Day 2 on a Class 1 River with an option to portage around major rapids
Duration: 2 days
Dates:  May 3-4
Prerequisites: There are no kayaking prerequisites, except a desire for fun and no issue getting wet!!
Cost: $135/person not including equipment/$150 with Kayak/Skirt/Paddle  + HST  

Beginner Whitewater Kayak (Paddling closed deck whitewater kayaks with spray skirts)
The Beginner River Kayaking skill level is designed to introduce the novice or relatively inexperienced kayaker to paddling moving water with perhaps some Class I-2. The emphasis is on learning and practicing the fundamentals of kayaking, along with a strong grounding in water safety and safe kayaking practices. Our goal is that you will be able to safely paddle your your whitewater kayak (no spray skirt) down rivers such as the Digdeguash/Magaguadavic/Eel/lower St.Croix. We will use a 'Comfort-to-Control' technique to get you over your fears and reservations and into enjoyment of the sport of kayaking.

Location: Day 1 on the Lake, Day 2 on a Class 1-2+ River with an option to portage around major rapids
Duration: 2 days
Dates:  April 26-27
Prerequisites: There are no kayaking prerequisites, except a desire for fun and no issue getting wet!!
Cost: $135/person not including equipment/$135 with Kayak/Skirt/Paddle  + HST

Our summer camp is a fun opportunities to try new things and enjoy being outdoors. Skills include canoeing, kayaking, geo-caching, rock climbing, nature hiking, swiming, sports, orienteering, games, crafts and much more.

Important Information:
  • Camps runs for six weeks this Summer, Monday to Friday. 
  • The weeks include: June 23-27, July 14-18, July 21-25, August 11-15, August 18-22 & August 25-29
  • Drop off as early at 8:00am every morning, with pick-up by 5:00pm; late pick-up as late as 5:30pm will be available.
  • A healthy snack will be provided daily. Lunches will need to be brought with the child.
  • Don't forget to dress for changing weather, bringing wet-weather clothing, sunscreen, bug spray a hat and a water bottle.

Employment Opportunities - LIFEGUARD POSITIONS


JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Lifeguard
DATE: Summer 2014

JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Beach Captain (or designate), supervises the designated swimming and beach areas; maintains constant surveillance to ensure the safety of swimmers in the water and on the beach; keeps daily records; maintains beach and rescue equipment; performs related duties on behalf of the Maritime DayTripping as assigned by the Beach Captain; participates in public relations projects and completes required in-service training.

JOB DUTIES
1. Supervision of the designated swimming area by:
Recognition and prevention of potential accident situations, using approved techniques for supervising bathers and rescuing beach patrons showing signs of distress, training to ensure mental and physical preparation in order to prevent the occurrence of emergencies, and administering first aid as required using approved methods.
2. Keeps records by:
Maintaining a personal in-service record, recording of air, water temperatures, daily populations, as required, and completing incident report forms as necessary.
3. Maintains the beach and rescue equipment by:
Removing hazards from the beach area and notifying patrons of dangerous conditions by posting information, keeping hut clean and organized, checking equipment daily for possible repairs or replacement, informing DayTripping/Beach Captain of maintenance requirements, designating supervised area daily by the placing of flags and markers, and keeping personal gear presentable for positive public image.
4. Performs related duties by:
Participating in approved local media coverage for public relations purposes, designing and modifying procedures, drills and equipment maintenance, undertaking personal and group participation in community
service projects, and performing other related duties as required.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
1. NLS Waterfront Option or Red Cross Waterfront Certification.
2. Standard First Aid with CPR Level C.
3. A thorough understanding of City of Saint John & Maritime DayTripping policies and procedures.
4. A high degree of mental alertness for long periods of time.

WORKING CONDITIONS
6.5-7 hour shifts, 32.5-35 hours weekly. Hazards associated with outdoor aquatic environment and of rescuing
drowning victims (e.g.: sun, inclement weather, dangerous water conditions)

REMUNERATION
2013 Rate: $11-14/hour

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT
June 22 – September 2, 2013 (some terms may vary slightly)
