My Favourite Places - Lepreau Falls

My Favourite Places

Hi, Rob here (Daytripping Owner). I thought I would take a few minutes every week to share with you a special place I have found in my many years of outdoor adventure training. Most locations will be in New Brunswick, but I may dabble into Maine or our neighbouring provinces. Hopefully after reading you will be inspired to go and enjoy this spot.

Quick legal blurb – I, and Maritime DayTripping Inc., cannot be responsible if you venture out there and hurt yourself, get lost trying to locate ‘My Favourite Places’, or something worse. We should all be responsible for our own actions. I am just letting you know of a cool spot I have been to. Okay?

Lepreau Falls
One of the easiest ‘drive-by’ waterfalls in New Brunswick. Head west of Saint John, and take the exit off Route 1 onto Route 790. From 790, you will want to take route 795 west almost immediately. Just past the Petro Canada gas station is the Lepreau Falls Road. The falls are a couple of hundred meters down this road. Enjoy!!

The falls are part of our UNESCO Stonehammer Geopark, much like the Daytripping Climbing Cliff in Rockwood Park. The Falls show rocks that “belong to the Mabou Group (CMA) and are likely Early Carboniferous age, about 325 to 315 million years old.” Rumour is there are fossil tracks to be found. The falls are a great example of erosion, as we can see evidence of the Lepreau River eroding the rock, as well as our powerful Bay of Fundy tides eroding the bottom of the falls.
If you are lucky and the tide is high and river levels are just right, you may see a kayaker or two running the falls and into the Bay, I won’t mention any names ;)
